How Can I Safely Tilt My Window AC Unit Back?

I'm not super handy, and with everything going on, I really don't have time to figure out how to tilt my window AC unit back. It's become quite urgent since it's a bit older and leaking more often, mostly due to high humidity. This particular unit, which I think is around 8k or 10k BTUs, was installed a couple of years ago by my landlord. It's on the second floor, so I'm worried about it potentially falling if I try to fix it by myself. It's not draining well and I've been dealing with water collecting behind the filter. Recently, it even leaked into my garage, and I want to resolve this before it causes more damage to the drywall. I don't have the unit's manual anymore, and with time running out, I'm looking for an easy solution that I can just buy and use.

A super simple fix is to use a small wedge or shim under the back of the AC unit to create a slight tilt toward the outside. You can find adjustable plastic AC shims or even a durable wooden wedge at most hardware stores. Just make sure it’s stable before letting go of the unit. It’s definitely a good idea to have someone help you hold it while you position it, especially since it’s up on the second floor!

That’s smart! Just be careful when you position it, and check the fit after to make sure it’s not going anywhere.

You might also want to consider asking your landlord to fix it, especially if it’s not installed properly. A properly installed unit should tilt back on its own, and they might be responsible for ensuring it’s safe.

Good point! Make sure you let them know about the leaks; it could save you a lot of hassle.

Also, if your AC is leaking, check to see if the drain hole is clogged. I had the same problem, and once I unclogged it, everything was fine. Just unplug it and spray some water through the outside drain hole to clear it out. Might solve your leaking issue too!
