I'm just starting out in woodcarving and I've heard conflicting advice about wearing gloves. Are gloves mainly for when you're using a knife, or should I also consider wearing them when working with chisels or gouges? I feel like it's harder to cut myself with a gouge or chisel, but I also want to be safe as I'm new to this. Any tips would be appreciated!

Cuts from chisels and gouges may not happen as often, but when they do, they can be deeper and more severe. So it's definitely something to keep in mind when you're starting out.
When you're carving with chisels or gouges, it's best to secure your workpiece to a stable surface. Not only does this prevent major cuts, but it also gives you better control. Honestly, I don’t wear gloves because they can make it hard to feel and control the tool, especially on smaller projects. Just be careful with your technique, and remember that if you're cutting hard enough to risk injury, you might need to rethink how you're using your tools.
Absolutely, better safe than sorry! When you're holding the workpiece and using a gouge, it can be quite dangerous, sometimes even more than using a knife. Just remember to stay aware of where your tool is going.
