Looking for Affordable Solutions for Rooftop Pots

Hey everyone! I've been loving my gardening hobby for years, but as an apartment dweller, I'm limited to using pots on my private rooftop. Unfortunately, I've been struggling to find a simple and cost-effective solution for my container needs. Each year, the cheap recycled pots I buy tend to get brittle and crack in the sun, and terracotta pots are just too heavy for my rooftop. Plus, the UV-resistant plastic pots are way out of my budget, especially since I plant around a hundred 10 to 15-liter (about 3-4 gallon) pots annually. I'm really looking for any DIY ideas or alternatives that won't break the bank or my back! Any suggestions would be awesome! ?

When I had a rooftop garden, I built some wooden boxes. It's really not that complicated, and if you're not sure about cutting the wood, most big hardware stores will do it for you. Use exterior grade wood and line the inside for better durability!

You make it sound so fancy! ? But I agree, building your own planters could be a great way to get exactly what you need!

Have you thought about using fabric grow bags? They're super lightweight and really easy to store away when not in use. I've had mine for several years and they hold up great!

I totally agree! I've seen a lot of people on Reddit using those fabric pots, and they're pretty easy to make if you're handy with a sewing machine. If you can find the right fabric, it could be a fun project! ?

You might want to check out feed store muck buckets. They're durable, UV-stabilized, come in different sizes, and are usually BPA free. Just drill some drainage holes, and you'll be set! Also, I recommend looking into Veradek for large planters that are affordable yet stylish. I have some that are over five years old and still going strong!

Thanks for that tip! I'm mostly growing hot peppers, so I really need something sturdy. I appreciate your suggestions! ?
