How Can I Make a Flat-Pack Gift for My Girlfriend’s Birthday?

I'm working on a gift for my girlfriend's birthday—specifically, a shelf for CDs and a speaker. Since we're in a long-distance relationship, I need to make it flat-packable, similar to Ikea furniture that uses Allen keys for assembly. I'm looking for easy ways to achieve this. Typically, I would rely on wood glue and screws, but that approach isn't suitable for my needs. Any suggestions?

The Ikea assembly style works great—use X bolts, cylindrical retainers, and make sure to predrill cylindrical holes where needed. If she’s handy with a drill or power screwdriver, send her some wood screws with instructions on where to screw them. Just make sure everything fits nicely before sending it off!

You could use threaded inserts and bolts. They're pretty easy to work with and will let your girlfriend assemble the gift without a hassle. Just pre-drill the holes to make it easier for her!

I thought you needed special tools to use threaded inserts, but it's actually pretty straightforward. Thanks for the tip!

Check out insert nuts—pre-drill the wood, and you can pop some of these into the holes. They work well for creating sturdy yet removable connections!

It's a bit of work, but if you go with screws, consider pre-drilling pilot holes at all the joints and number them with a pencil on the wood. Include a box of screws (maybe a cordless driver if you want to make it easier for her) along with some glue, sandpaper, and finishing supplies. It’ll make the assembly much smoother!

You might look into systems like Festool's domino connectors that allow you to assemble furniture like flapped pack items do. If you also explore dowels or sliding dovetails, you can make strong joints. Just keep in mind that these might need more specialized tools.
That said, if you’re only armed with a drill and miter saw, you'll need to keep it simple!

I had no idea that Festool system existed! It looks fantastic—thanks for sharing!
