How Can I Keep My West Facing Room Cooler with Shades and Curtains?

Asked By CuriousPenguin42 On

I've got a room in my new house that faces west. I've already installed solar shades and blackout curtains, but it still heats up quite a bit. Interestingly, the master bedroom, which also has a west-facing window but only has blackout curtains, doesn't get as warm. What other options do I have to keep this room cooler? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

You might want to check if the walls have enough insulation. Sometimes that can really affect how warm a room gets. Also, consider if there are any obstructions like blocked air ducts that might be affecting airflow. Adding more shade from trees outside could help too, if that's an option!

Have you thought about using Coolaroo Shades? They’re like heavy-duty screens that go on the outside of your window. You can usually find them at Home Depot, but Costco sometimes has them for a steal! They’ve worked wonders for me.

That's a neat idea! I stuck some outdoor blackout shower curtains on my deck that gets blasted by the sun for hours, and the difference is incredible!

Have you considered installing some reflective window film? It can help reduce heat without affecting the light too much.

If the windows and curtains are still getting really hot, might be worth looking into some outside shutters or blinds. Those can really help keep the heat out without blocking the view.

Or you could try adding an awning! It provides shade but still lets you see out. Might be a great solution!
