What’s the deal with self-watering pots?

I've set up a DIY self-watering system for my Breynia disticha, and it's thriving after two weeks! I'm considering using self-watering pots for my other plants too, but I'm curious why some people choose not to use them. For those who have experience with them, do you have any insights or recommendations for good self-watering pots?

I keep it simple with just a few plants, so watering isn't a big hassle for me. It allows me to monitor their health better. But I've had issues with fungus gnats getting worse when I use self-watering pots! Still, I’m a fan for my Alocasias—they seem to do well with it.

I mostly use wick watering for most of my plants. I haven't tried it with cacti, though—they probably don't do well in those conditions. It's important to note that not all self-watering pots are created equal; the material and how much water they retain can make a big difference. Make sure the soil doesn't get too saturated, and don't forget to fertilize and leach the soil every once in a while! It’s much easier for me to refill reservoirs than to check every single plant.

Every time I've tried self-watering pots, my plants ended up dying from root rot. It's super frustrating because I really want them to work! I guess it depends on the pot design and the type of plant you're using them with.

Totally get that! It’s a shame because the idea is really appealing.
