I'm researching how people protect themselves from sunburn, and I'm curious about the popularity and usefulness of straw hats for that purpose. Do people commonly wear straw hats, and do they really help in preventing sunburn?

I wear straw hats throughout the summer, but not specifically for sun protection. My trick for avoiding sunburn is to get a little sun each day without overdoing it. I cool off in the hat and hope it helps minimize my skin cancer risk down the line.
Absolutely, I have a collection of about a dozen straw hats! Mine are more for fashion than gardening, though. I've got some really stylish ones that I adore wearing out.
That sounds great! Do those stylish hats last long?
I prefer a ventilated leather hat, which is great for keeping the sun off my face, especially since I've had skin issues in the past. I have a rugged one for sweaty jobs and a nicer one for client meetings. Honestly, I think straw hats are more about ventilation than actual sun protection. There are hats with SPF that might work better for that purpose.

Do straw hats generally hold up well over time?
