I'm working on a Halloween costume and need some advice on making a mask with a mouth that can open downward by about 2-4 inches. I want it to stay open for about 10 seconds before closing again. The mask has space at the front corners to accommodate whatever mechanism I use. I'm a bit new to this kind of project, having only worked with LEDs in the past. Would using solenoids be a good option, or is there something better? Ideally, I want to power it with 5v, but I can go up to 12v if necessary. Any tips?

You might want to consider using a servo motor, like the ones found in model airplanes. They're pretty common at hobby shops, and with an Arduino or similar controller, they're easy to manage using standard libraries. Just make sure you have enough space for it in your design!
Check out Adafruit and Sparkfun for beginner-friendly Arduino components. They offer great products, and their websites are filled with useful information for enthusiasts just starting out. You'll find everything you need there!
