Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on how to handle draining excess water from my water butt. I have a flat-roofed garage that collects rainwater in this butt, but it tends to overflow into a gravel area that might not be designed for soaking it up properly. I've noticed some subsidence in that spot, though thankfully it's not near my house.
I'm considering two options: First, I could try running a hose from the top of the butt about 10 meters to a drain. My concern is that the hose will have some ups and downs that could make it hard for the water to flow out. Second, I could run the hose in the opposite direction towards a section of my garden that slopes down, but I'm worried about causing flooding in an already wet area.
I'd love to hear any thoughts or alternative ideas you might have. Thanks a bunch!

Linking multiple water butts together is definitely an option if you have the space. That way, when one gets full, the water can flow into another without worrying about overflow. Just make sure they’re connected well!
If you just want to stop the butt from overflowing, you might consider diverting the water elsewhere, like attaching a hose to drain into another water butt or simply draining it to a lower spot. As long as the outlet is lower than the top of the water butt, it should work!
If your current setup isn't working, consider adding another pipe that leads towards the drainage. It might require some DIY effort, but redirecting the excess water more effectively could help. Just make sure it's directed to a safe outlet!

But wouldn't that just fill up another butt quickly? I think the goal should be moving water away from the area altogether.
