My Dog Scratched Up the Hardwood Floors – What Can I Do?

So, my son just moved back home with his dog, and our hardwood floors are taking a beating. I'm wondering what my options are to fix them up without having to replace the entire upstairs flooring once they move out. Any suggestions?

It really depends on the type of hardwood you have. If it’s solid wood, you should be okay with sanding and refinishing it. However, if you have engineered wood or LVP, often those can't be sanded without damage. You might end up needing to replace those or even carpet over them. Just keep in mind the condition before deciding!

I think hiring a pro to refinish could be worth it if the floors are solid hardwood. They’ll sand it down and apply a new finish. But if you decide to DIY, be ready for a messy cleanup! Just be cautious - if the scratches are mostly at the bottoms of doors, that's a different issue than random nail marks across the floor.

You can definitely sand and refinish the floors to get them looking like new! If the scratches are just on the surface, a buff and coat might do the trick. But if the damage is deeper or there are dents, you'll want to do a full sand and refinish. Also, starting now, make sure the dog's nails are trimmed regularly to prevent any further scratches!
