Hey everyone! I'm working on a wood carving for a friend and usually I would use different woods for different colors. However, for this project, I think painting might be the way to go. I've never painted wood before, so I'm a bit lost. I've been considering using acrylic paint but I'm not sure if I need to seal the wood first with oil or something similar. Also, I'm thinking about leaving some wood areas bare because I really like the natural color. What are your thoughts? Are there any important tips or things I should know while painting?

I've painted a lot of wood figures, and there's a couple of ways to seal the wood. A simple method is to use a base layer of the acrylic paint you're going to use, then sand it lightly before adding more layers until you reach the darkness you want. There are specialized wood sealer products too, just ensure they're compatible with acrylics. I like using a good spray wood sealer, but brush-on works well too. Don’t forget to sand lightly between layers to avoid a rough finish. If you're looking for a wash look, avoid paint as a sealer; use a true sealer instead, then thin your acrylic with water afterwards. Test out your process on scrap wood first, since acrylics can dry darker than they appear. And remember to use fine sandpaper for the best results!
I'd recommend sealing the wood with linseed oil before you paint. Those YouTube videos can be super helpful, too!
Sounds good, I’ll try that on some scrap wood first!
Just dive in and see what fits your style! Also, you might want to check out YouTube channels like Linker and Johnny Layton for some great guides.
Never heard of those channels before, but I’ll check them out, thanks!

Wow, this is super detailed! I’ll definitely test these tips on some scrap wood to find what works best for me.
