Why Does My Dishwasher Sometimes Fail to Drain?

I've been dealing with a frustrating issue where my dishwasher doesn't always drain the dirty water at the end of a cycle. This happens around 1-2 times a week, and I usually try manually triggering the drain. After pressing the button multiple times, it sometimes finally drains as it should. When it doesn't drain, I hear a humming noise from the machine, like it's struggling to do the job. I often empty the trap, so I doubt that's the problem, and it does drain properly most of the time, which makes me think the drain tubes are probably okay. I'm leaning towards either a bad motor or control board as potential culprits. My main question is: can a bad or failing motor cause this intermittent draining issue, or would it just stop working completely? Any insights would be appreciated!

Check the installation of your drain lines. Improperly installed lines can cause all sorts of problems. My current dishwasher has the drain line properly set up to avoid these issues, and it really helps. It might work okay at first, but eventually, it leads to drainage problems. Definitely look that over before jumping to more serious mechanical issues!

Great idea! I’ll compare my setup with the manual and maybe check out a YouTube video for guidance.

You might want to start checking the small stuff first. It’s possible that the drain line has a partial clog, and that could be causing the intermittent issues. Sometimes there’s just a small opening left for the water to drain, which can lead to these kinds of problems.

Yeah, I think I’ve noticed some blockage where the line connects to the wye fitting under my sink too. It can definitely cause issues!

I had a similar situation, but instead of the motor, it turned out to be a faulty sensor telling the dishwasher it still had water in it. A repairman replaced that sensor for me, and everything's been running smoothly since. If you can, look into that as a possible issue too!
