Hey folks,
I'm reaching out to see if anyone has taken the RHS Level 2 – Unit 1 exam on Principles of Plant Growth & Development in June 2025. I felt really confident going in, but I ended up failing with just 33%. I'm pretty bummed about it since I put in a lot of prep time. This setback not only affects my plans for the next unit but also holds me back in my career change aspirations. I'm currently in a full-time job unrelated to horticulture and can only study by correspondence, which has been tough with limited support from the college. They have restrictions on when and how often we can reach out to the tutors. I'm determined to switch careers into horticulture, especially since I want to avoid going back to an office job. Any advice or experiences you'd like to share?
Thanks,
Karine

Hi Karine! I’m also studying the RHS Level 2 Principles this year. I heard from my tutor that even seasoned gardeners struggled with that exam, so you’re not alone. Gardening is definitely more about practical skills than academics, so don’t get too disheartened by a single exam. Employers value reliability and a willingness to work through all kinds of weather, especially from career changers. Just make sure to gain some experience, like volunteering, and you’ll be on the right path. Good luck with your retake!
Hey Karine, I'm really sorry to hear about your exam result, but don’t lose hope! I’ve been in the horticulture field for over 40 years, and while qualifications are nice, I can tell you that passion matters most when hiring. It’s tough balancing a full-time job with studying; I tried correspondence myself and found it overwhelming. My best tip would be to find volunteering opportunities to gain some hands-on experience. It can really help you make connections in the industry and show future employers your commitment. Keep your head up and continue pushing forward!
