I'm currently in a tough spot with some subcontractors we've hired before. They've made some significant mistakes in the past and have had to return to fix their issues. Unfortunately, I can't just hire someone new since we've already paid them and don't have the budget to start over. I've tried to educate myself through YouTube videos about the repairs needed, but I'm still nervous that they might cut corners. For instance, they installed a door that's too high and crooked, and from what I've seen, they're just tightening the hinges instead of addressing the problem properly by shimming it. What do you think I should do?

If they’ve really messed up before, make sure you haven’t made the final payment yet. Keep that until everything is verified to be done right. It’s your leverage to ensure they fix their issues properly and according to the contract.
As a fellow YouTube fanatic, I’d have them show me their work before they leave. I’d probably think it’s fine at first, but later realize they didn’t do a great job. Then I’m stuck fixing it myself after several trips to the store!
I’d suggest doing a walk-through after they finish the day's work instead of watching them the whole time. You can check in on the job once they leave, jot down any concerns, and then discuss them with the contractors the next morning.
Exactly! A quick evening check could save you a lot of headaches later.

But remember, judging by the scope of the job, don't withhold payment for minor issues. If you’re too strict, you might scare off good contractors for future projects.
