I'm trying to figure out the name of those corner pieces that are often used with baseboards in older houses. I initially thought they might be called finials, but that doesn't seem quite right. Any suggestions?

Those are often referred to as plinth blocks or rosettes, depending on their design. Plinth blocks are usually found at the base of columns or door trim. What you’re looking for are the pieces that help the base moldings meet at the corners, and sometimes they can be shaped like three-quarter rounds for outside corners.

Actually, you're right to question finials. Those corner pieces might be both decorative and functional; some can even be quite tall and used to protect plaster corners. It's important to find the right term as some might really vary in style depending on the age of the house!
