I'm trying to install a large floating shelf, specifically a live edge slab measuring around 70" x 16" x 2.5" and weighing about 40lbs. My plan is to cut into the drywall, attach three heavy-duty L brackets meant for countertops directly to the studs, and then put 1/4" drywall back over the vertical parts of the brackets, mudding and taping them. This way, only the horizontal parts of the brackets will be visible. I've found suitable brackets rated for 150lbs each, which might be overkill, but they seem sturdy. I know there are better options like a Sheppard bracket, but those are way more expensive here in Canada, and my choices are limited. I've seen mixed opinions online about my method—some say it's fine, while others think it's a bad idea. Can anyone share their experience with similar shelf installations and whether my plan is sound?

Your plan seems solid! As long as you're using robust hardware and anchoring those brackets into the studs properly, it should hold up just fine. Mudding and taping over the vertical parts of the brackets can give it a nice finish as long as you do it carefully. Just make sure the brackets can take the weight when fully loaded!
I think your approach is feasible, but just be extra cautious about securing those L brackets into the studs. You might consider adding toggle bolts for extra security, although if you're going into studs, that may not be necessary. Just ensure everything is well anchored!

Yeah, I plan to make sure everything's anchored into the studs. Thanks for the tip!
