Hi everyone! I recently installed a Chimeless Ring Video Doorbell Wired, which features two-way talk, advanced motion detection, an HD camera, and real-time alerts for monitoring my front door. It's been about four weeks since the installation. However, just yesterday, I noticed that my original doorbell chime started making a humming noise and smelled like burnt rubber. Thankfully, my husband got home in time to disconnect everything. It looks like the transformer in the original chime box failed, but just to clarify, my Ring Doorbell is completely independent and not connected to that chime box.
Previously, the owners had a Google Doorbell that worked with the chime box, but it never connected to my account, which is why I replaced it. We followed all the installation instructions provided in the app for the Ring Doorbell without altering any wiring. Now, to top it off, our Ring Doorbell is offline and disconnected from WiFi. Did we miss something in the installation process that could have caused the chime issue? Any advice would be appreciated!

It sounds like the humming and burning smell from your old chime could be due to the Ring Doorbell not having the right bypass in place. Since your Ring is a chimeless model, it’s supposed to come with a chime bypass kit that needs to be installed in the chime itself. Skipping that could lead to overheating the transformer or the chime unit. Definitely check if that was included in your package!

Thanks for the insight! We didn't see that bypass kit in the box when we installed it. I remember the Google Doorbell being connected to the chime too, and when we took the chime box off, it had this small piece that was so hot! Should we consider replacing just the transformer, or would buying a battery-powered Ring Doorbell make more sense?
