Are Termites in New Mulch a Concern for My Home?

I recently spread about 10 yards of medium bulk mulch, which is made from shredded bark and leftover tree bits from logging. Since putting it down, I've noticed flying termites and some crawling around my home's foundation. The mulch isn't piled against the house and is a few inches away from it. I'm concerned about the potential for termite issues in my house. Should I worry about this? Is there anything I can do to prevent them from becoming a problem? Will they die off during the winter?

I totally understand your concern! It’s pretty common to see some termites in new mulch, especially if it’s sourced from logs. Sometimes it just happens, and it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re facing an infestation. Plus, those flying termites you see are mostly looking to mate and find new nesting spots. Just keep an eye on your foundation and make sure the mulch stays clear for better air circulation.

You might want to consider spraying a barrier of termite and carpenter ant spray along your foundation. It’s a good call to create a little protective barrier about 6 inches up from the ground. Just make sure to follow the instructions on the spray for the best results.

Generally, you shouldn’t panic. Most modern home woods are treated in a way that makes them less appealing to termites. However, if you're in an area where termites are common, it can be worth having a professional come in to evaluate your risk and help identify the termite species. That way, you can take appropriate steps if necessary.
