How to Run Ethernet Cables Through Walls and Crawlspace?

Hey everyone! I'm a DIY newbie and I want to run Ethernet cables through my walls and into the crawlspace to connect my PC across the house. I've seen some tutorials, but I'm a bit confused. Once I finish the setup, can I just plug my router into the wall jack and connect my PC to the wall jack in the other room for internet access? What's the best way to go about this? Thanks a bunch!

Absolutely, if you run a cable from one room to the other, it’s just like a super long Ethernet cable! Just make sure to follow the correct wiring layout: use 568A or 568B. 568B is more common, so keep the wiring consistent on both ends for best connectivity.

If you can, use Low Voltage (LV) conduit and run two cables instead of one. It’ll give you options for future growth and a backup if one cable has issues. Yes, you can plug the Ethernet cable from your router into the wall jack and the other end into your PC, assuming there's a free port on your router!

You're on the right track! It’s a good idea to use plenum rated cable for areas with airflow and armored cable when running through the crawlspace since rodents can chew through regular cables. If you’re wiring more rooms, label the cables well. A multiport outlet near the router and single ports in other rooms should work great. If you need more connections than your router has ports, consider adding a Gigabit switch to expand your setup!

Exactly! Planning cable runs is key. We wired our home during construction with two Ethernet cables per drop, linking them to a patch panel and switch. If you have fiber optic internet, it connects to your modem and then the router.
