I'm planning to upgrade the ceiling of my screened porch by installing stained wood tongue and groove panels. Currently, there's a painted plywood ceiling, and I want to know the best approach for this project. Should I remove the plywood entirely and attach the new planks directly to the ceiling framing, or can I just take off the trim and install the wood over the existing plywood? I'm leaning towards leaving the plywood as is unless there are concerns about trapped moisture or any other issues I might not be aware of. Any advice would be appreciated!

I covered my plywood ceiling too! I just marked where the joists are, used a bit of construction adhesive, and nailed the groove directly to the plywood. It turned out great!
Great question! As for wood choice, I'd recommend going with cedar if you're looking for aesthetics after staining, but pine might be easier to work with since it's more common to find straighter boards. Both can look nice, so it depends on your preference!

This is exactly what I would do in OP's situation.
