I recently bought some unused Addis gouges, but they still have what looks like a wax coating on the ends of the handles. It's a bit sticky and really uncomfortable to use with it on. I did manage to remove it from one gouge, but it peeled off some of the finish underneath, which has me worried. Should I be removing this coating before using them?

Yeah, definitely take that coating off before you start using the gouges. It's meant to protect them during storage, but it can just make them uncomfortable to hold. By the way, where did you find those unused Addis gouges? They’re pretty coveted among woodworkers!
What's that coating even for? Is it just wax or something? Looks kinda weird.

I found them on Jimbodetools! Got super lucky, and they even came with a nice tool roll. I filled it up with other Addis gouges I found at an estate sale!
