Help! There’s No Insulation in Our Attic – Can We DIY It?

We recently discovered that our 20-year-old house in South Texas has zero insulation in the attic. Our contractor, who went up there to install some bathroom lighting and ventilation, noted that there's not a single bit of insulation—just markings showing where it should have been. We feel a mix of frustration about the builders and ourselves for not realizing this sooner. Is insulating the attic something we can tackle ourselves? Our contractor seems to think so, but if it's better done professionally, what kind of expert should we look for?

Yes, you can definitely DIY the attic insulation! Just grab some cellulose insulation and a blower—often, when you buy enough insulation, they'll rent you the blower for free. Make sure to follow the lines drawn for insulation depth. Just be careful up there; it can get pretty hot, and don’t risk falling through the ceiling! Also, consider air sealing before you blow in the insulation to maximize energy efficiency.

Great advice! Just make sure to stay cool while working up there. I got lightheaded and accidentally stepped through the ceiling once. Air sealing before you start is definitely a must!
