I'm getting into finer box making and experimenting with different types of hinges like pin and box hinges. I've been sourcing some from Amazon, but I've noticed that some of them have a bit of 'play'—meaning they fold correctly but can still shift a little left or right when closed. Is this normal for hinges, and is it something I should actually want? Looking for some insights. Thanks!

Yeah, Amazon can be hit or miss. Many of their items might be decent but often come from manufacturers that cut corners. A little tolerance is fine since it allows for wood movement, but overall, you want a hinge that fits well and is durable. Spending a bit more at a reputable hardware store could be worth it!
I’d say no, hinges shouldn't have slop. Often, cheaper hinges will have more play, which is a sign of lower quality. For a good, snug fit, you want a hinge that operates smoothly with no slop, but those can be pricier—especially for small box hinges.

Totally agree! It's better to invest in quality hinges—they’ll last longer and work better in the long run.
