Is My GC’s Response Normal After I Asked About Work Quality?

Hey everyone! I'm diving into a washer outlet installation project without a permit and I want to get some feedback from those with more experience in construction or working with general contractors (GCs). My GC recently did some work, like installing a new drain line, pipes, and electrical for my washer/dryer setup. I wasn't on-site when he finished, and I only got to see photos afterward. Here are a couple of things that have me a bit worried: 1) I'm not sure if the horizontal drain line has enough slope. 2) I noticed some electrical wires go through studs and there are spots without nail plates. 3) A few studs were cut pretty deep for the drain installation, and it seems like they just threw some nail plates on the cuts instead of providing proper reinforcement. As a first-time homebuyer, I'm just trying to figure out if these concerns are valid. When I brought them up to my GC, he snapped back that if I didn't trust him, he could stop the work and charge me for what he'd done. He also said I should've been there with a level if I had questions. Is this kind of response from a GC typical? Should I be worried about what's behind the wall? I have another project scheduled with him, but I'm not sure if I should keep moving forward after this tension.

It may be a good idea to look for another GC, especially after how he responded. Building margins for safety is essential; I wouldn't want someone who doesn’t appreciate the importance of inspections and permits. It's crucial to have someone knowledgeable you can trust.

Definitely! Finding a GC who’s licensed and willing to work through concerns is key. Plus, permits protect you in the long run.

Honestly, it’s odd that you have a GC but no permits. That response about trusting him is definitely not normal—it sounds defensive. Make sure to take this seriously because a GC should be able to handle your concerns without making you feel bad about it. I'd caution you against continuing without proper permits or transparency from him.

Yeah, permits are there for a reason. If he's doing unpermitted work, it opens up a can of worms. You could end up in a bad spot if something goes wrong or if someone reports him.

It’s concerning that you’re working without permits. Generally, if you're hiring a GC, they should be proactive about ensuring everything is good and not dismissive of your questions. His response sounds unprofessional—you shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable asking about the safety and quality of work in your own home. If he’s acting like this now, I’d be wary of continuing with him.

Totally agree! If you’re paying someone, they should be respectful and open to questions. Don't let his attitude deter you from ensuring the work is up to par.
