Hey everyone! I'm trying to set up the heat properly for my Ackie monitor in my new 4x4x2 enclosure but I'm running into a serious issue: my flood lights keep burning out way too quickly! I have two double-dome fixtures each rated for 160 W and I've been trying various bulbs, but nothing seems to last.
Originally, I started with 100 W halogen bulbs, which got the basking area to around 105-110°F. I upgraded to 150 W bulbs to boost it to about 120°F, but I really need to reach at least 150°F since the natural surface temps for reptiles can go as high as 172°F. After getting a second fixture with more 150 W bulbs, my basking spot reached around 130-140°F, but the bulbs began burning out within just a week. I tried swapping in some 100 W bulbs just to see if they'd last longer, and they seem to work better, but don't provide enough heat. I'm wondering, what could be causing this? Any tips on better heat setups or why my bulbs keep burning out?

I think the key here is to use better bulbs! I recommend ceramic infrared bulbs; I've been using them for my rabbits and they've lasted through two winters without any issues. Also, you might want to look into bulbs specifically designed for reptiles, as they can handle the heat better and last longer.
Definitely go for ceramic heater bulbs; they'll last a lot longer and only need one to do the job! Trust me, it’ll simplify your setup!
You might want to consider radiant heat panels instead of piling on multiple bulbs. Those stay cooler but provide consistent heat, which might help with your burning bulb issue. Also, specialized reptile settings could give you more tailored advice!
Are you using heat lamp bulbs specifically meant for this purpose? Regular lighting bulbs often can't withstand the heat levels you need. Additionally, check if there's any chance of water misting on the bulbs or if they shift when you walk by. Either could reduce their lifespan.
