What Are the Essential Basics of Gardening for Beginners?

I'm curious about what foundational knowledge is necessary for gardening. If you were advising a friend who's just starting out, where should they begin? Should they focus on understanding soil, garden design, seed selection, or something else? What are the most important elements to grasp for success in gardening?

As someone who's still learning, I suggest focusing a lot on the soil. I mistakenly bought topsoil instead of garden soil, and now I'm worried about the nutrients I might be missing. I'm planning to add organic matter as the season goes on. If I knew better about soil from the outset, it could have saved me some trouble!

The first thing to understand is that you're really farming the soil, not just watering plants. Remember, the key elements for successful gardening are water, light, and nutrients. Overwatering is a common mistake for beginners, so be careful there. Also, soil health plays a huge role—it's all about the microbial life in it that helps break down organic matter and feed your plants. Don't forget to consider optimal conditions like temperature and humidity as well!

Totally agree! I used to think watering was everything, but it’s really about the soil and the little organisms in it.
