Hey everyone! I'm looking to dive into gardening, but I'm a complete beginner. I live in metro Atlanta, Georgia (Zone 8A, I think?), and I'm planning to build raised garden beds for growing vegetables. Can anyone recommend some beginner-friendly veggies? I'm particularly interested in growing beefsteak tomatoes and squashes. Also, I could really use some advice on how to construct these garden beds and what types of veggies grow best in my zone. Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I know I'm a total novice!

Honestly, just dive in and start planting! This is my first year as well, and I learned a lot by just going for it. I suggest looking up growing guides on YouTube—that’s how I picked up a lot of info. Expect some plants to struggle and lose a few along the way, but that’s all part of the experience. For planting times, try searching for your city alongside 'farmers almanac planting calendar'. Tomatoes are a great option for beginners, too! I had a fun first season, and I hope yours will be rewarding as well! Good luck!
While I’m in zone 5b, I can still share some general tips that might help you out. There’s a ton of gardening methods out there, so keep experimenting until you find what works best for you. You’ll want to choose between conventional and organic gardening. If you go organic, focus on soil health with compost and companion planting. For conventional, just be ready to use fertilizers regularly. Raised beds are basically containers—make sure you get good quality soil that’s well-draining yet retains some moisture. Remember, mistakes happen, especially when you’re learning, so don’t get discouraged! Tomatoes and peppers are popular, but they can be demanding. In my area, zucchini grows easily, so check what's best for your specific location. If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
Thanks for your detailed advice! I'll definitely keep this in mind as I get started.
Check out the University of Georgia's extension service for home gardening resources. They provide pamphlets that can help with what to plant and when. You can also enter your county name for local advice. This way you’ll get tailored information for your area which is super helpful!
I've heard about muscadine grapes from folks in warmer zones. They sound amazing! Your zone sounds fantastic!

Thanks! I’m planning to look for plants suited for October since that’s when I’d like to start. I had a tough time with carrots last time, so I’m ready to learn!
