Should I Remove My Old Sprinkler System or Just Leave It?

I've got this inground sprinkler system in my front yard that's just not working out. The heads are placed in the middle of the grass instead of the edges, which leaves the sides brown and lacking coverage. In the back, I didn't have any setup, so I picked up an OtO, and I'm really pleased with it. Now, I'm getting another OtO for the front and plan to switch off the old sprinkler system. Do I have to dig up the old system entirely? I'm thinking of pulling out the center sprinkler heads and filling those spots with dirt since they're actually low areas in my yard. If I choose not to dig out the lines, will I need to cap them off? Or can I just leave them and hope for the best?

Removing any old, unwanted fixtures is usually a good idea, in my opinion. I've cleared out lots of outdated infrastructure around my place, whether it was old gas lines or broken wiring. If it's practical for you, you might feel better after getting rid of it instead of just leaving it there, you know?

I hear you! I’m dealing with some dead sprinkler heads that keep popping up too. It's such a hassle! But yeah, leaving them should be fine as long as no one trips over them or anything. Otherwise, caps might be a good idea just to be safe.

Honestly, I’d just leave the old system in the ground. It's not going to hurt anything! In fact, you might save someone in the future from a surprise digging experience when they wonder about all this random piping.
