What’s the Best Finish for Outdoor Canarywood?

Asked By CraftyPineapple88 On

I'm new to working with hardwood and I've got some canarywood that I want to finish for outdoor use (no direct rain exposure). I'm looking for advice on what finish would work best since I want people to sign it, and I'm concerned about the signatures peeling off. I've heard mixed opinions: some say polyurethane is great, while others argue it's not ideal for outdoor conditions. I've also come across spar urethane, but I've heard it can peel. And then there's varnish, which some people think is too soft. Can anyone share their thoughts or experiences?

I think there might be some misunderstanding about polyurethane. Generally, it's a solid choice for outdoor projects. It can be a bit shiny, which some people might not like, but it holds up against rain well.

Thanks for the clarification!

True, it’s strong against rain, but keep in mind it might not hold up against UV light long-term. Other finishes could be better for that.

For canarywood, I recommend using spar varnish or a marine-grade finish. They’re designed for outdoor conditions and will give you a nice seal, just make sure to prepare the wood properly before applying.

Spar urethane works well, too, especially for wood exposed to the elements. Just remember to sand between coats to avoid peeling.
