Should I Choose the M12 Stubby Gen2 or the M18 Mid Torque for DIY Auto Work?

I'm looking for advice on whether to go with the M12 Stubby Gen2 or the M18 Mid Torque for some DIY auto maintenance. My goal is to tackle tasks like removing lug nuts, calipers, brakes, shocks, struts, and control arm bolts, along with some engine work. I've been using a basic 1/2" breaker bar and ratchet without issues, but I'm curious if the more compact stubby will be powerful enough for my needs or if I should just opt for the M18 mid torque, keeping in mind I'd pair it with a 5Ah HO battery. I drive a 2021 Accord, and luckily rust isn't a big problem yet since I'm in the rust belt.

If you're dealing with rust, you might want to consider a 1/2" high torque impact to avoid needing a breaker bar. The M12 Stubby has about 550 ft/lb torque, while the M18 Mid Torque is around 600 ft/lb, so they're pretty close. Is that extra torque really necessary for lighter auto work, though?

That's a good point! If you're mostly doing light work, the stubby should do just fine. It might save you some space too.

I have both tools, and if I could only choose one, I’d go with the Stubby. It's compact and handles most tasks well. I also use my right angle impact frequently, just wish it had a bit more torque for the heavy-duty stuff.

My experience with the Stubby has been great! It's managed most of the jobs I've tackled so far. The high torque is definitely useful for heavy jobs like axle or pinion nuts, but for your needs, the stubby should be sufficient.
