Is it okay to use a spade bit on a metal stud?

I'm planning to mount a projector on the wall, and I need to attach two of the mounting holes to a metal stud using snaptoggle bolts. Can anyone tell me if using a spade bit is a good idea for this job?

You definitely could try it, but it might be a rough experience. If you need a big hole, a spade bit might not be effective at all. Self-tapping metal screws could also solve your problem without making a huge mess.

Self-tapping screws would really simplify things here—great tip!

Why not just skip drilling through the metal stud entirely? Snaptoggle bolts can work just fine with just the drywall. Some people worry about the strength of the studs, but I've hung heavy stuff like cabinets with them and they hold up well—just make sure you're using the right screws!

That makes sense! Thanks for the reassurance on the metal studs!

Using a spade bit on a metal stud is probably not the best choice. It can tear the metal or even bind up, which can be dangerous. You might want to consider using a step drill instead—it works much better for sheet metal and will give you cleaner holes.

This is really good advice. Step drills are like magic when it comes to cutting through metal!
