What’s a Fair Price for a Full Bathroom Remodel in LA?

I'm in the process of getting quotes for a full bathroom remodel and I've received bids ranging from $28k to $40k. The lower bid doesn't include some key items like a stand-alone tub, shower tiles, or new fixtures, so I'm expecting to put in an additional $4-5k for those. The project involves completely gutting the bathroom down to the studs, including demo work on a closet from an adjoining room and widening a doorway. The walls and ceiling need new drywall, and I'll also be upgrading the plumbing and electrical systems. My bathroom's dimensions are 8.75 ft by 11.5 ft, and I live in Los Angeles County. I'm eager to get started but want to make sure I'm not overpaying. Also, I've heard about potentially saving money by acting as my own general contractor. What kind of savings could I expect by managing the different trades like plumbing and electrical myself?

There's really no one-size-fits-all quote since prices vary so much by location and circumstances. It sounds like you have a good range of quotes to work from. However, it’s hard to give a precise estimate without more specifics like materials and timelines. Just make sure you know exactly what work will be done and have your contracts clear. And remember, it’s your house—do what feels right for you!

Honestly, it's probably best to avoid being your own contractor. Managing all the separate trades can be a nightmare if anything goes wrong. I had a similar experience when I remodeled a small bathroom and went down to the studs. I thought I could save money but ended up needing to fix a lot of issues that popped up along the way. It's crucial to have a contractor who can address problems without putting additional costs on you. Your quotes sound reasonable for the work you're planning, so sticking with a contractor is probably the safer bet. Good luck!

Thanks for your thoughts! It makes sense to leave it to the pros, especially since I'm already a bit anxious about the whole process.

I’d say $25k to $30k is a good ballpark for the work you’re planning. Just keep in mind to set aside an extra 10-15% for unexpected surprises that might come up during the remodel.

Thanks for the breakdown! I'll be sure to keep a buffer just in case.
