Hey everyone! I need some advice regarding my parents' kitchen renovation. They recently got new cabinets and countertops, but it turns out the cabinets were installed 3.5 inches off from where they were supposed to be. I spoke to the owner of the cabinet business, who initially tried to brush it off by saying that it just looked off because of some changes made to the cabinet dimensions. I pointed out that while the dimensions were adjusted from 143.75 inches to 144 inches, the cabinets still need to line up correctly. When I insisted on correcting the placement, he mentioned that moving the cabinets would be more trouble than it's worth and would leave visible screw holes behind. The cabinets were supposed to align with the edges of the kitchen island and an opposing wall, and it's also inconvenient that the lights above are misaligned with them. He suggested instead moving the island, which would create an even tighter space between it and the refrigerator.
I feel strongly that we should demand a fix for their mistake, but would my parents have to deal with extra holes left from the misplacement? Plus, there are issues like cabinet doors being hung incorrectly and some scratches on the white cabinets. I'm curious about what others would do in this situation? Thanks, and I appreciate any thoughts!

I agree, 3.5 inches is a pretty significant error! You shouldn't have to put up with that. Firmly tell the contractor to fix the cabinets according to the original plan. And don’t be shy about requesting it to be done properly – it’s your kitchen after all!

Honestly, it really sounds like the contractor isn't up to par. I’d consider firing them and possibly looking into legal action to recover the cost of hiring someone who actually knows what they're doing. Your parents deserve better!

Thanks for the encouragement! I wasn't sure if I was asking for too much since this is our first renovation. It's nice to know we're not overreacting.
