I'm currently working on installing a refrigerator surround in my kitchen, with a freestanding wall setup. This includes a side panel on the left, a cabinet on the right, and a top cabinet that's 24 inches deep over my refrigerator, which is 36 inches deep. I'm considering whether it makes sense to build a 12-inch box mounted to the wall for extra support at the back. Also, I'm unsure about the order of installation—should I start with the top cabinet, then the side cabinet and panel, or something else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's important not to mount cabinets directly to the ceiling joists. Since you already have two wall-mount cabinets and a side panel, consider how you will align everything. If your over-the-fridge cabinet is just 24 inches deep, it should ideally be flush with the fridge front, leaving about 12 inches gap at the back. As for the 12-inch support box, I’d say it's not necessary if your setup is stable enough. Just focus on stabilizing everything with the cabinets and panel you've got.
Custom surrounds can make a big difference, but definitely make sure everything aligns well to avoid future issues.
Also, just a heads-up: check where the refrigerator's condenser is located. If it's on the back or in the compressor compartment, that's ideal. If it's built into the sides, you might face overheating issues for both your side cabinets and the fridge itself. Don't forget to leave some space on the sides for venting.

That makes sense! I just wanted to clarify because I thought about that 12-inch gap. But if everything's structurally sound, maybe it's not needed.
