Ordering Topsoil for the First Time: Got Questions?

I'm gearing up to order 3 yards of topsoil to level my bumpy lawn, but I've got some questions since I've never done this before. I'm trying to avoid hiring a landscaping company that would charge me over $1,000. Here are my concerns:

1. If I ask them to dump the topsoil directly onto my front yard, will that harm the existing grass? Or should I just have it delivered to my driveway instead?
2. How easy is it to clean up if it ends up on my concrete driveway? Do I need a pressure washer, or is a strong hose enough? Should I consider laying down a tarp?
3. I'm planning to shovel the topsoil into a 4 cubic feet dump cart and transport it around my yard, which will take roughly 20 loads. How long do you think this will take me? Is it a half-day job, a full day, or should I plan for two days? I want to avoid overdoing it!

It’s often tricky getting delivery on anything other than paved surfaces, so asking them to dump it right on your lawn could be a gamble. If you do opt for your driveway, cleaning up is usually straightforward if you don’t let it sit too long. A powerful hose should do the job, but honestly, a pressure washer makes it even easier if things get messy. As for the right tools, make sure your shovel is flat and wide for efficiency. A 5-gallon bucket can actually be a really handy alternative for scooping soil if your shovel isn't quite cutting it!

Thanks for the tip about the bucket! I didn’t realize it could be useful. I’ll check if I have a good shovel or pick one up!

Honestly, your best bet is to just dump the topsoil on your lawn. I did a similar project recently with 5 yards, and it only took me about an afternoon to get it leveled out. Once you have the pile, just rake it out like a top dressing—it’ll make things way easier!

It really depends! If you’re planning to work steadily without too many breaks, you can probably finish in a day. Just remember to take your time and drink plenty of water so you don’t overdo it!
