How to Wire Separate Volume Pots for Guitar Pickups?

Asked By GuitarGuru99 On

I'm working on a partscaster guitar and I'm replacing almost everything except the body and neck. I'm planning to get rid of the five-way selector switch and want to set it up with individual volume pots for each of the three pickups, along with a single tone button. I'm considering a blend pot to manage the overall tone since I want to mix and match the pickups at different volumes. I'll be using a router to change the tremolo system, so I can do any necessary routing. I'm looking for a wiring diagram or advice on how to hook this all up properly. Any thoughts?

For wiring diagrams, I'd check out some guitar modding sites or YouTube tutorials—they usually have visuals that can help you a lot. As for blending pots, they can really add versatility to your sound. Just remember that different pickups will interact in unexpected ways. Have fun with it!

It sounds like a cool project! Just a heads-up: wiring the volume pots separately can cause some issues with signal crosstalk, where one pot's signal might affect the others. You might want to look into using resistors or maybe even diodes to prevent feedback if that comes up. But diodes might not work as well since they deal with DC signals, while your guitar works with AC. You might wind up with a bit of fuzz in the mix if anything does feed through—could actually add a nice effect! Here’s a tip: make sure to get a clear wiring diagram online, too. There are plenty of examples for wiring pots like this!

Good point about the diodes! It's definitely something to be cautious about. Might be worth experimenting to see how different configurations sound.
