I recently had my gas meter replaced, and when the technicians removed the old meter enclosure, they left a large square section of siding missing, revealing cement backer board. I have no experience with siding repairs. Should I take off the metal trim around this area and try to install new siding myself?

One option is to just paint the cement backer board to match the siding. If the area isn't super visible, it's likely that no one else will really notice it being different. Just make sure to choose the right paint for weather resistance!
Do you have any pictures? It would help to see what kind of siding you're working with. Also, are you certain it's cement backer board behind that?
I can't figure out how to post pictures here, but it's aluminum siding and I'm positive it's cement behind it.

But would painting alone really protect it from rain? Should I use a sealer first?
