Best Places to Buy Starter Woodcarving Kits?

I've recently watched someone woodcarving on Better Call Saul and it sparked my interest in picking up this hobby. I've been browsing this subreddit and while I know I shouldn't be spending money right now, I can't help but feel drawn to woodcarving. Can anyone recommend the best stores for starter kits? I've thought about Scheels, Fleet Farm, Lowe's, and Home Depot, but I'm curious if there are better options out there. Thanks!

If you’re looking for beginner kits, definitely check out Woodcraft and Joann Fabrics—those places usually have what you need. I’d steer clear of Hobby Lobby though, not a fan. Also, try some smaller hobby stores if there are any around; they often have great tools to start with.

Yeah, Joann's is actually closing a bunch of stores soon, so might want to grab what you can! But Woodcraft is a solid choice.

Woodcraft often has great deals on starter sets, so keep an eye out for those. They have some good quality kits if you’re just beginning.

To start, you really just need a basic knife and a detail knife. I've made some pieces with just two knives. Here's an example of a 6" tall carving I did. You can gradually add gouges when your budget allows. It’s all about getting comfortable first!

For sure! Using good quality knives makes all the difference. I carved a hummingbird using two knives—really helped with detail. Don't forget to grab sharpening stones and a leather strop; those are a must!

Michael’s has decent starter supplies for carving, both in tools and wood. Lowe’s and Home Depot are more for general construction stuff, not really tailored for woodworking.
