I'm thinking about painting a shirt, but I'm not sure what type of paint is best to use. I only have acrylic paint on hand, and I worry it might not hold up well in the washing machine. Does anyone have tips or suggestions for the best paint to use on fabric?

I've used acrylic paint on clothes before, but fair warning—it doesn’t usually wash out! I recommend testing it first with a thin layer to see how well it holds up. I’ve painted sew-on patches with it, and they’ve been fine because they don’t get washed as much. Another tip? Try mixing the paint with a bit of fabric softener to make it easier to apply in thin layers!
If you want to use acrylic paint, you can mix it with a product called fabric medium. This helps the paint bond with the fabric better. Just remember to heat set it after it dries for best results. You can find instructions online about using fabric medium.
You could also consider using spray paint that's specifically designed for fabric. I've seen it available at craft stores, which can be a great option for painting shirts.
