Should I Install a Ceiling Fan Box in the Attic or Use a Spreader Box?

I'm looking to put ceiling fans in my kids' rooms where there's currently just a light fixture. The existing box is situated between two joists, and I'm considering putting a 2x4 between the roof joists to securely connect the new box. However, I noticed there are options for old work fan installation that don't require attic access, and I'm wondering if it's really worth the hassle to get into the attic for this installation.

If you can get to it from the attic, I’d recommend using one of those new work ceiling fan boxes. It made my installation way easier than trying to fit everything through that little hole in the ceiling!

Totally! It’s just easier to clear away some insulation and dirt than mess with tight spaces inside.
