Can I Lower My High Mantle to Make Room for a TV?

Hey everyone! I'm struggling with the layout of my family room. We currently have our TV in the corner, which isn't ideal. The only other viable spot is above the fireplace, but the mantle is really high. I shared a link to a picture of it. I'm contemplating whether I could cut down the top three bricks (about 8 inches) to lower the TV position. Is that a feasible option? Just to mention, the fireplace liner is cracked, so it's not in use right now. I plan to install a gas or wood stove insert in the future, but I'm not sure how cutting down the mantle might affect that.

Honestly, a mantle mount might be your best bet. I was worried about the layout in my living room too, but after getting one, I'm super happy with it. I even snagged a refurbished model to save some cash! Check out my setup here.

I'll definitely consider that! I'm just a bit worried about the height. Will my TV be too low with that setup? My couch is about 13 to 15 feet away, and I’ve got a 65-inch TV from my apartment days. I might need to downsize if it doesn't fit right!

Have you checked with your local code office about the mantle height? It looks pretty standard to me. Just keep in mind, if you lower the mantle, it might put you out of code. It could be a hassle to deal with later on. Just something to keep in mind!

Yeah, I think the mantle’s safe at over 12 inches from the fireplace edge. But lowering it could complicate things if you're planning an insert. Always better to double-check regulations first!

Haha, I misread your post at first! I thought you meant the liner inside the chimney was cracked. Best of luck with it!
