Quick Fix for Kitchen Countertop in Dining Room?

Asked By CraftyExplorer92 On

I recently moved into a house with a kitchen that's pretty much unusable right now, so I'm throwing together a makeshift kitchen in the dining room using items I already have. One of the main surfaces will be an old door from my studio. I'm planning to sand it down, but I'm wondering if there are alternatives to tung oil that I can use to make it somewhat food safe. I'm not planning to cut directly on it, just need a space for my toaster oven, hotplate, and to set up my ingredients. Any creative and budget-friendly suggestions? I'd like to avoid spending a ton right now since I eventually want to rebuild the kitchen properly. Thanks in advance!

If you're not using the surface for cutting, just opt for a finish that's non-absorbent and repels water. For heat resistance, consider using tile—floor tiles work great! You can get a piece of plywood cut to fit the tiles if you want. Just use large tiles to minimize grout cleaning. Alternatively, check out some thrift stores for a table that you can tile over.

Thanks for the awesome tip! I actually have a big ceramic tile that would fit my toaster oven perfectly, so that might just do the trick!
