Can I Use a 12V Cooler with My 24V Battery Setup?

I'm new to solar systems and trying to configure my four 100 amp hour 12V AGM batteries for a 24V setup. I have a 50 amp charge controller that works for both 12V and 24V, and I'm looking to buy a 24V 3000W pure sine inverter/charger for my work trailer to power tools and a small compressor. My main concern is whether I can still use my 12V cooler and any other 12V DC devices without complication. Is there a safe way to tap off the 12V? I want to minimize using the inverter to save power.

Just make sure your 12V cooler is actually just 12V. A lot of dual voltage fridges can work directly off 24V too, which might save you some hassle!

You can technically tap 12V from the midpoint of your two batteries in series, but it’s not a good idea for anything other than the tiniest loads. Doing that would discharge the batteries unevenly over time, which could lead to bigger issues. A much better solution is to get a dedicated DC-DC converter that will step down the 24V to a stable 12V output for your devices.

Got it, thanks! So if I just plan to run a 5A load intermittently, would that be okay or still risky?

There are DC-DC converters available on eBay specifically designed for setups like golf carts that could work for your setup too. I found some pretty affordable options!

The general consensus is to go with the 24-12 converter, as you’ll save efficiency long-term. About efficiency loss, yes, there is a slight drop, but for a 5A load, it shouldn’t be significant. Most of the losses would come from balancing battery output rather than the converter itself. Just make sure your setup is designed correctly to handle the loads you intend to run, as it can get pretty complex.

Yeah, I learned the hard way that every component needs to match perfectly—burnt out a couple of fuses before realizing ?.

You could consider using USB-C outlets with PD trigger modules; they might deliver 12V without needing a converter. But be wary of the current supply—it might not be enough for all your devices.

Absolutely, you should get a 24V to 12V converter. I use a Victron Orion for my gear, and it works like a charm! You can find several models online that fit your needs, just make sure to pick one that can handle your total current requirements without issue.
