I'm in the process of getting new vinyl siding and replacing a casement window. The installers completed most of the siding but left a section unfinished until the new windows arrive in about 8 weeks. Since we're using targeted J-channel trim, I need to install that before the siding goes up. I'm capable of opening up the sheathing and reframing the window. My main question is whether I can install the exterior trim now to finish the siding, even if the window isn't in place yet. I can wait on the interior trim, but I want to know if I have options like using a replacement insert window, and what the best approach would be for the exterior trim while waiting.

I think you can go ahead with the exterior trim if you're careful! Just remember that you'll likely need to take it down to install the window later. Make sure the trim doesn't interfere with the new window. You'll want to check the weatherproofing too, using flashing tape and caulking should help keep everything sealed until your window arrives.
You might be able to install the trim over the rough opening but be prepared for it to come down later when the window goes in. If you want to go ahead, just ensure everything is cut correctly so it doesn't complicate the window installation. Also, keeping your exterior wrapped with Tyvek is a good start for waterproofing.
It's generally better to install the window first before adding trim, as the trim could block your access to insert the window properly. However, if you really want to get that exterior trim on now, you can consider installing flangeless windows. I've had success installing doors with brick mold in place, so it can work, just make sure you think about how it all fits together later.
