Water Damage on Ceiling But No Obvious Source – What Should I Do?

I'm dealing with water damage on a section of my ceiling, but despite searching in the attic, I can't find any signs of a leak. The most affected area is in my living room, and the wall next to it connects to a laundry room/mud room, which also doesn't show any moisture or evidence of a problem. The insulation in the attic looks dry, but it has a slight crispness that makes me wonder if it's been damp at some point. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Any advice on identifying the source or what my next steps should be?

Have you checked your gutters lately? It looks like there could be water pooling above that area. If they're blocked, that could lead to water coming down where it shouldn't. Just a thought!

That's a good point about the gutters! I did clean them out last fall but should probably check again. Since the wall is interior and not directly exposed to the peak, I'm wondering if the ridge vent might have an issue, too. Just a thought!

If you're considering replacing the damaged drywall, it might be a good idea, but there’s a risk it could happen again. Have you thought about trying some bleach or a paint like KILZ to tackle any stains? It would also help to know if the problem persists or comes and goes – that could give you more clues.

You might want to explore areas away from where the stain is visible. Water naturally flows downhill and seeks paths of least resistance, so the source could be farther from the damage than you think. Check around the beams or joists above the wall! Good luck!
