Insulation Estimates: Why Such a Big Price Difference?

I've received two quotes for wall insulation—one for exterior and one for interior. The first estimate is $3866 for the exterior and $2881 for the interior, totaling $6767. They didn't specify the brand but mentioned R-15 for exterior and R-11 for interior, plus they included air-sealing. The second estimate comes in much lower at $1950 for the exterior and $1353 for the interior, making a total of $3303, and they are using CertainTeed R-15 for both. I haven't met with the third company yet. Is it typical for insulation quotes to differ this drastically? The second estimate is half the cost of the first. The first company has 80 five-star reviews, while the second has 182. If you were in my shoes, would you take the risk with the cheaper option? Just to provide some context, I'm situated in Southern California.

Definitely look into why the estimates vary so much! Sometimes, more expensive quotes include additional services like better air-sealing or more comprehensive warranties. Given that the walls are open, you’re in a good position to evaluate both options. If you're leaning toward the cheaper estimate, just ensure that they have good reviews and ask specific questions about what's included in their service.

Exactly! It’s worth asking the second company if they can explain their differences in approach or materials. Knowledge is power here!

It's pretty common to see big differences in insulation estimates. Factors like brand, quality, and the specific scope of work can all make a difference. Product quality is important, and pricier insulation might be better in the long run, but the second option using CertainTeed R-15 sounds solid too. If the walls are open and it’s just for installing insulation, you might be safe going with the cheaper option. Just make sure to check reviews and maybe ask for references!

Right, and don’t forget to consider how long the cheaper company has been around. Sometimes longevity means better service!
