Best Way to Use Mosquito Dunks in a Rain Barrel?

I've got a rain barrel for watering my plants, but I've noticed an explosion of mosquitoes around my yard since I started using it. I try to empty the barrel every few days, but they're still swarming. I recently purchased some mosquito dunks to tackle this problem. Given that I frequently empty the barrel, should I place the dunks directly in the rain barrel, or would it be better to put them in a separate bucket filled with standing water?

Adding a few small fish could be a solid solution! They munch on mosquito larvae, and their waste will serve as fertilizer for your plants. Just be cautious about the winter temps if you're in New York and plan on using the rain barrel year-round.

That's interesting! I could keep some inside during the winter. Should I buy them or can I catch some locally?

You can definitely use those mosquito dunks in your rain barrel! They're perfectly safe for your plants and pets, and even if you empty the barrel often, the bacteria in the dunks work for a while. Just toss one in and you're good to go!
