I'm considering cutting a door into my angled kitchen island (which is from the late 90s or early 2000s) to access some dead space. I've got a few ideas and would love some input! I'm thinking of using a circular saw along a template after checking the area with a scope camera. The goal is to make this dead space usable, especially for storing emergency food buckets. I initially wanted to add a GFCI outlet for the dishwasher under the sink, but this new plan seems more practical. How does this sound? Are there any concerns I should be aware of?

It sounds like a solid plan! There won’t be a cabinet floor in that area, just an opening down to the subfloor. Most likely, the back of the island is just covered with a thin panel, so accessing that dead space shouldn’t be an issue. Just be sure to cut carefully! You might want to think about how to hide the opening once you’re done.

That’s good to know! I think I’ll keep it open for rarely accessed storage, but I might debate between a minimalist cover and something that matches the cabinets. Either way, I want it to look decent!
