I'm looking to freshen up my front yard landscaping this spring. I've used mulch for a while now, but I'm kind of over it. I'm curious if there are any options besides rocks, or if soil alone would work for me. Anyone have suggestions?

I'd steer clear of using only soil on its own, as it’ll quickly invite weeds. Generally, mulch is better for plant beds since it can manage moisture and hold plants in place, but it does require upkeep. On the other hand, rock beds are tough to manage and can be too harsh for many plants, though they do reduce insect issues. I'd say mixing in some vibrant plants could create a nice balance if you're looking for something other than traditional mulch!
Mixing in biodegradable materials like cardboard or newspaper under the mulch can help suppress weeds while still letting it improve the soil over time. But do be careful with how you layer it; just the right thickness will be key! If you want to try something new without the clutter of rocks or plain soil, maybe consider spreading ground cover plants or flowers that will ultimately fill in the space nicely.
Thanks for the tips! I might just try that layering method.
If you're not a fan of mulch anymore, consider incorporating plants into your landscaping instead! They can add color and texture while reducing the need for constant upkeep. Just make sure to choose plants that thrive in your climate.

Totally agree! Those ground covers can really help with weed control too.
