Best Spindle Sanders: Wen, Harbor Freight, or Ridgid?

I'm on the hunt for a spindle sander to tackle those tricky sanding jobs that are tough to do by hand, especially inside cutouts and curves. I've been eyeing the ~$100 Wen spindle sander, but I've come across some mixed reviews about Wen's quality. Some folks really vouch for it, while others say Harbor Freight has better options. What do you all recommend?

You’re not starting a production shop, so just pick whichever one you can get at the best price. I use my Ridgid a few times a year and it's great for that kind of work!

True! But hey, who knows if I might need that 42" planer someday?

I've had nothing but luck with Wen tools and never faced any real issues. They’ve all served me well!

I don't own a Wen spindle sander, but I've got a bunch of tools from Wen and Harbor Freight. Honestly, the quality seems pretty similar between them, so you might not go wrong with either.

Both Wen and Harbor Freight, along with Ryobi and other budget brands, cater to budget-conscious users. Often, they're kind of hit or miss with quality control, so make sure to check reviews. I’ve had the Ridgid oscillating sander and it’s solid overall, with just a bit of a hassle with tightening it. It chips away at dust well too, although you'll make a mess no matter what!

Great insight! What model Ridgid do you have?

So far, I've had a great experience with my Wen sander I picked up for around $80. It’s been fantastic for the minimal use I've given it, feels way pricier than it actually is. I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for a good value!

I think the Wen and Harbor Freight versions are practically identical—same factory, different colors. I found both around $200. The only downside I've experienced is occasional tracking issues with the belt, but overall it's been a good tool for my needs.

I'm mostly doing sanding on the insides of cutting handles; do you think it has adequate sizing for that?

I've started using sanding drums with my drill press, and it's working out pretty well! I once fixed up an old drill press from a war veteran; it's still running strong. Just curious if that lateral pressure from the drums might wear it out faster, though?

That’s an interesting setup! Assuming your drill press can handle it, it should be fine. Just keep an eye on it to make sure everything stays aligned.

I also like my Harbor Freight spindle sander – it's a real timesaver! Plus, I get my sanding drums from Klingspor, which makes it all easier.

I've got the Ridgid spindle/belt combo sander, and it's done well for me! The oscillating function really helps with my projects, plus it has a miter gauge which the Wen doesn't have, making it more versatile. Definitely worth considering if you plan on using it frequently!

If you go with the combo, definitely check out the Ridgid! It also has features like a fold-down table and good dust collection, making it a great choice overall.

Totally agree! The Ridgid has been lauded as the best value in some reviews too. I've had mine for years without any serious issues.
